The Environmental Impact Statement/Approval (EIS/EIA) process is a core component of the project. Altona recognises that environmental management and positive, ongoing community engagement are as important to the Government approval process and the social license to operate as the resource and engineering components of the project.
The Study Engineer is experienced in the EIA process nationally and in South Australia. It is likely that a single EIS process which would satisfy both State and Federal requirements will be sought. A precedent for a single process has been established in the State by other major projects in the region, such as Olympic Dam.
Altona maintains close contact with State and Federal agencies and keeps them informed of project milestones. This early engagement of regulators and other stakeholders will assist in aligning expectations and reduces the risk of unexpected schedule disruptions and cost over-runs.
Detailed studies of the environment (including flora, fauna and water), indigenous archaeology, anthropology, history and heritage clearance will also form part of this process. Each will be the subject of appropriate consultation.
